As we approach general conference, I have read and heard speculation regarding what will be announced or changed. We surely live in exciting times as members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Last April I was caught up in the buzz of changes made to priesthood quorums. Then serving on a bishopric, my mind was in overdrive as to how we would implement those changes into the ward. Sad to say my enthusiasm regarding the change, led me to miss the real message President Nelson had to share… That we can all receive and better apply personal revelation.
It was only in the days that followed, as I read and re-read President Nelsons talks, that I realised I had been caught in the “thick of thin things”
Consider this quote from President Nelson.
“Nothing opens the heavens quite like the combination of increased purity, exact obedience, earnest seeking, daily feasting on the words of Christ in the Book of Mormon, and regular time committed to temple and family history work.” April 2018
It simply, yet profoundly puts into one sentence the essence of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
In the same talk President Nelson says…
“I am optimistic about the future. It will be filled with opportunities for each of us to progress, contribute, and take the gospel to every corner of the earth. But I am also not naive about the days ahead. We live in a world that is complex and increasingly contentious. The constant availability of social media and a 24-hour news cycle bombard us with relentless messages. If we are to have any hope of sifting through the myriad of voices and the philosophies of men that attack truth, we must learn to receive revelation.”
I’m glad conversations with friends made me see what I had originally missed. How sad it would have been if my focus on changes to policy and procedure, caused me to miss precise and specific counsel, to develop my spiritual muscles and listen for revelation.
Let our prayers and conversations be full of desire to hear, but more importantly to apply, the counsel we will be given in just under two weeks time, from a living prophet. Replace speculation with testimony building. Know that prophets live and reveal messages for our day.
The organisation and policies of the church will always change, perhaps now at a accelerated pace, but the Gospel of Jesus Christ does not change. Hence my comment above, that I was caught uo in the thick of thin things.
It’s my hope, that as we approach general conference we can all seek to focus on the gospel messages deliverd by prophets and apostles, that will show us how we can Hasten the work of Salvation.
“Its like a finger pointing away to the moon. Don’t concentrate on the finger or you will miss all that heavenly glory.” Bruce Lee 😃
