For the Strength of YOU

“Heavenly Father has given you agency, the ability to choose right from wrong and to act for yourself. Next to the bestowal of life itself, the right to direct your life is one of God’s greatest gifts to you.”

I don’t think anyone will deny that the opening paragraph to this post is applicable to everyone of us. Regardless of our age! Did you know it is from the introduction to “For the Strength of Youth” ?

For a long time I have felt that as adults, we are slightly hypocritical when dealing with youth. We teach correct principals, but don’t always adhere to them ourselves. Some years ago I was discussing movie age ratings with a group of young women on a camp. During the course of the conversation I realised that if the WORLD determined a film was only suitable for an adult, in the Lords eyes it probably wasn’t actually suitable for anyone!

The point I’m coming to is that standards are standards regardless of your age. What the Lord has warned our youth about, is just as good a warning for adults. Hence the “slight modification” in my opening picture.

The contents of the booklet “For the Strength of Youth” is actually applicable to us all, it could easily be renamed “For the Strength of You”

If you haven’t read this church booklet before, or not for a while, I invite you to do so. It can be found online HERE. Or in the Gospel Library app, under the heading Youth. Over the years since its first printing it has been updated and refined, so use a current one or the online version.

There is strength to be had in living to the standards we teach our youth, I have put picture links to 6 of the standards below, each is important for adults…

The entire list can be found online HERE, I’m pretty confident we can all brush up on something. In fact having recently spent sometime with a group of Youth at a conference, I think we have a lot to learn from them !

  1. I understand the premise, but disagree. Our youth are undergoing many physical and emotional changes and need a strong and less ambiguous guide.

By saying it directly applies to all members regardless of age does not acknowledge the complexities of adulthood. It also furthers the infantilizing of our adult members.
