We have decided as a Stake Presidency, that whilst church meetings are suspended, we will share a spiritual thought to our members each Saturday. I thought it would be good to put them here too, for future reference and for others outside of the stake to ponder if they wish. Week 3 of suspended church meetings is by myself President Teal, Counselor Stake Presidency.
Come, Follow me..
Cast your mind back to October 2018, just 18 months ago. Do you remember the buzz that surrounded General conference regarding the reducing of Sunday meetings to 2 hours and the associated introduction of “Come, Follow me” Subsequent meetings were filled with the phrase Home-centered church. A phrase coined by President Nelson…
“As Latter-day Saints, we have become accustomed to thinking of “church” as something that happens in our meetinghouses, supported by what happens at home. We need an adjustment to this pattern. It is time for a home-centered Church, supported by what takes place inside our branch, ward, and stake buildings. President Nelson October 2018”
This week I have often found myself reflecting on Moses raising the brass serpent on a pole. The Children of Israel had been plagued by fiery serpents that infected them with a deadly venom. The solution was simple enough, look at the brass serpent Moses had raised and live. But as recorded in Alma 33:21 many found the cure too simple.
“O my brethren, if ye could be healed by merely casting about your eyes that ye might be healed, would ye not behold quickly, or would ye rather harden your hearts in unbelief, and be slothful, that ye would not cast about your eyes, that ye might perish?”
How timely and how prophetic our instructions 18 months ago were… Here we are today, we have little option than to be Home centered, but we are prepared. Studying “Come Follow, me” should already have been a habit when our church meetings were cancelled, if it wasn’t, it’s not yet too late. Hopefully we are not treating this habit like a brass serpent, and dismissing it lightly.
As a Stake Presidency, all the information and instructions we have received since the suspension of meetings have a focus on “Come follow, me” and Ministering. Is it too simple? Regardless of your age or household situation you can study from a “Come, Follow Me” manual at home. It is a time to seek personal revelation and trust in the companionship of the greatest teacher, The Holy Ghost.
Regarding ministering. We hope as a membership we haven’t become too reliant on technology. There are great things that can be achieved with, Facebook, WhatsApp, Zoom and other platforms. But many of our elderly, single and most vulnerable do not have access to these blessings. Can we encourage you to pick up the phone and SPEAK to people “One by One”. Specifically reassure them, check they are OK, ask them about their scripture study, even say a prayer with them.
We love you, you are in our prayers. Like you we have moments of fear, but are lifted by the phrase “This too will pass” The more vigilantly we heed the instruction to STAY HOME, the quicker this will pass.
