Feasting or self imposed starvation

(Stake Presidents message Week 14)

Its been 14 weeks since we’ve been to Church and had the opportunity to take the sacrament. Many have commented on how they miss being able to take the sacrament and our hearts go out to you.

Today I would like to share some thoughts specifically to those members who have been unable to have the sacrament administered.

A few years ago I had the chance to share some time with Elder Defeo of our Area Presidency. I was able to ask him a few questions. One question I asked was “whats the most difficult thing about being a General Authority ?”
His answer was not what I expected. he said “Not being able to take the sacrament weekly”
He went on to explain that he could go 6 weeks without the sacrament due to always being assigned to a Stake or regional conference.

I have had time to reflect on the sacrament a lot over the months we have not been at Church.

I have realised a few things.

1. The act of eating a peice of bread and drinking a small amount of water in itself has no abilty to feed us spiritually.
2. Altough we may not be able to “take” the sacrament we can REMEMBER (as President Harrot taught last week) the Covenants we made and determine to live them.
3. We can have access to the Spirit whenever we want !

I ask all of us Brothers and Sisters. Are we feeding ourselves spiritually or are we on a self imposed spiritual starvation ?!

We are blessed to live in a day where we literally hold in our hand the ability to access the words of living prophets aswell as all the scriptures inparticular the Book Of Mormon which was written with us in mind.

Remember what President Nelson said before “Lockdown”

“In coming days, it will not be possible to survive spiritually without the guiding, directing, comforting, and constant influence of the Holy Ghost.”

How are we surviving spiritually ?

Are we feasting or are we living on scraps that fall off the plates of others ?

Brothers and Sisters it is my prayer that we will not wait to be fed (the reality is that no one can really feed us spiritually we have to learn to feed ourselves if we want to survive)

Lets feast and fill ourselves by doing those things we have been invited to do over and over.

Say our prayers (meaningful and heartfelt)
Read the Book Of Mormon and apply its teachings
Study “Come Follow Me”
Watch or read previous conference talks

Are you full yet ?

May the Lord bless all of us as we strive for Spiritual self relience.

Much love
President Hughes
