Food Bank Appeal

Early in December 2020, President Harrott had a strong impression to find some way of helping the community. In the middle of Covid restrictions, there were limited options and our church buildings were closed due to government restrictions. There was however a provision for chapels to open to conduct work relating to Food Banks. An idea was formed and after a virtual meeting between the Stake Presidency and Stake Relief Society Presidency plans were put in place, to collect food on our upcoming Stake Conference weekend. We would try to …

“Feed the Stake Spiritually and the Community physically”

With the support of Bishops, Relief Society and Elders Quorum Presidencies, it was agreed that chapel doors would be opened for an hour or two, to allow socially distanced collection of food on the Saturday of Stake Conference (21/11/2020)

We even made a video that to date has reached over 5000 people on Facebook. Initially, it was unsure what the response would be, so we didn’t nominate receiving Food Banks, just in case we would not collect enough to share. We needn’t have worried. Members spoke to neighbours, friends and local business owners and the food flooded in to our 6 buildings.

Several Food Banks have subsequently benefited from such generous donations and lives will have been helped along a little. The week after Stake conference resulted in multiple packed cars and vans taking food from chapels to organisations best placed to distribute to those most in need.

Deliveries were made to Bolton Food Hub, Farnworth Trussel Trust, Infinity Initiatives C.I.C, Ashton Food Banks, Oldham Food Bank and Rochdale Food Bank. There is a lot more we can do and there is a great need for service. It is the Stakes intention to continue to encourage, support and assist in helping wards to engage with their communities through 2021.

“Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me”

Matthew 25:40
